Instead of a typical resin, the blades are actually impregnated with a foam, similar to the process used to make skis and snowboards. The result is blades that are among the strongest available, with superior strength and abrasion qualities. Slightly heavier than the Freerides, but a great choice for hard use.

I started paddling the Lightning Freeride Custom Bent Shaft a month ago. Prior to that I've owned various models of Werner, AT, and Lightning paddles (back in the day). The Lightning Freeride is my everyday paddle now, and I use it on creeks, play boating, and river running. Here's what I like most about this paddle:
* Toughness - This is a tough paddle, and I trust it for longer self-support trips and on manky creeks (like we have here in Colorado). Want some proof of how tough the paddle is? Check out this video on YouTube: http://youtu.be/fJtS7K4rGTI
* Power - Large blades and a stiff shaft provide tons of power.
* Ergonomic - The shaft's radical bend offers an ergonomic fit and a super positive index. It's the best ergonomic design than any other paddle I've used. What tendonitis I had in my elbows is now gone (coming from an AT superduty paddle). The index is radical, and it did take me a day of paddling to get used to it, but now I'm not going back.
In summary, this is one of the best paddles I've ever owned. 5 stars.

I got my Lightning Chlorophyll paddle in January, and now I cannot use any other brand of paddle. Nothing compares to the bent shaft grip of Lightning! The blades are power producing machines. The durability factor of the blade is top notch, flow tech material does not splinter! I am a Lightning Paddle convert for life now.
